What Is the Polar Night Marathon?

The Polar Night Marathon is unique in that it takes place during Tromsø’s polar night, when the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon. This creates an otherworldly atmosphere of twilight, enhanced by streetlights reflecting off snow and ice, and, if you’re lucky, a chance to see the Northern Lights dance overhead.

The event offers several race options to accommodate different fitness levels:

  • Full Marathon (42.195 km)

  • Half Marathon (21.1 km)

  • 10 km Race

  • Relay Races

Runners come from all over the world to test themselves in sub-zero temperatures and snowy streets, making it both a sporting challenge and a cultural festival.

When and Where

  • Date: January (next 3rd January 2026)

  • Start & Finish: Tromsø city center, often near the harbor area

  • Time: Evening start times are typical, adding to the dramatic polar night atmosphere

The course winds through Tromsø’s illuminated streets, past historic wooden houses, the Arctic Cathedral, and the fjordfront — a scenic mix of urban and Arctic vistas.

Practical Tips for Participants:

Dress for Arctic Conditions

Temperatures can range from -5°C to -15°C (23°F to 5°F), so layering is key:

  • Base layer: Moisture-wicking thermal top and leggings

  • Mid layer: Insulating fleece or light down

  • Outer layer: Windproof and water-resistant jacket

  • Accessories: Thermal gloves, a hat, and a neck gaiter or buff

  • Footwear: Trail running shoes with good grip; consider spikes or Yaktrax if streets are icy

2. Hydration and Nutrition

  • Hot drinks and water stations are usually available along the course.

  • Bring energy gels or snacks suitable for cold weather.

  • Cold weather increases caloric needs, so plan to eat a bit more than usual pre-race.

3. Night Running Gear

  • Headlamps are recommended for extra visibility.

  • Reflective clothing is mandatory for safety, especially since parts of the course are poorly lit.

  • Some runners attach LED lights to their shoes or clothing for fun and visibility.

4. Race Preparation

  • Check the official Polar Night Marathon website for course maps, race rules, and registration deadlines.

  • Arrive in Tromsø at least 2–3 days in advance to acclimatize to cold weather and jet lag.

  • Warm up indoors before heading to the start line — Arctic cold can tighten muscles quickly.

Tips For Spectators:

Even if you’re not running, the Polar Night Marathon is a spectacle worth witnessing.

  • Cheer stations are located throughout the course.

  • Many cafés and restaurants in the city center provide hot drinks and snacks while you wait for runners.

  • Don’t forget your camera: the contrast of running lights against snowy streets makes for dramatic photography, especially if the Northern Lights appear.

Travel and Accommodation Tips

  • Flights: Tromsø Airport (TOS) is the main gateway, with connections from Oslo and other European cities.

  • Accommodation: Book early — hotels fill up fast around the marathon. Consider central locations to avoid long commutes in freezing temperatures.

  • Transport: Most hotels are within walking distance of the start/finish area, but public buses are available if needed.

Unique Arctic Experience

Participating in the Polar Night Marathon is more than a race — it’s an Arctic adventure. The surreal experience of running under the polar night sky, sometimes illuminated by the aurora borealis, is unlike anything else in the world. It combines physical endurance with the thrill of experiencing Tromsø’s unique natural and cultural environment.
